A Desert Off-Limit for summer

Australia's outback Simpson Desert will be closed for the first time this summer to prevent visitors from dying in the extreme heat, officials said. The Simpson Desert Conservation Park and Regional Reserve in South Australia will be off limits from December 1 to March 15 each year, beginning next month, the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage said. Temperatures in the Simpson Desert during summer are extreme, with daytime temperatures of between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius common. An official of the department, Trevor Naismith, said: "Most People that cross the desert during summer are from overseas, and many do not have the driving experience for such a crossing, or a properly equipped vehicle with radio communications and recovery gear in case of an emergency." He said that during summer sand dunes were soft and constantly changing shapes, increasing the chance of vehicle becoming bogged down, while there was a greater risk of vehicle breakdown during the hotter months. "At a time when there are very few vehicles in the desert to provide assistance in a timely manner, this is potentially a fatal situation, especially for the inexperienced, ill-prepared visitor", he said.

Force India snapped ties with Ferrari

Determined to do better in the next season. Force India on Friday formally snapped ties with Ferrari and is all set to ink a new deal with McLaren-Mercedes as its engine supplier for the 2009 season. The Vijay Mallya-owned outfit announced in a statement that Force India requested Ferrari to permanently terminate the deal, which as scheduled to expire in 2010. "The agreement signed in 2007 also provided for a supply of engines in 2009 but will now terminate ahead of schedule at the request of Force India," the statement said. "Force India wishes to thank Ferrari for its valued support to date," it added.

Addressing press persons here on Thursday, K.Rajeshwari, VP (marketing and branding), said the service was offered through an access device 'Nova Navigator'. It is a multi digital desktop, providing the user with a complete computing experience for the home and has the capability to replace all the digital equipment. According to Vinod Kumar Gopinath, chief Technology Officer, the device, priced Rs. 5,999, could be plugged into any broadband connection. The company hopes to set 75,000 units in the first year. With a centralized server, the Navigator offers flexible packages and customers get optimum bandwidth with an option to increase it if they want more storage space.
