Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer: $149 Gap

A Sunday evening, an old streaming stick that stutters on every menu, and two tabs open: Apple's new box and Google's. Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer looks like a spec contest, and it is closer to a price one. Our call: buy the Google TV Streamer, unless one of the conditions near the end describes your home.

Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer boxes on price-height plinths

Buy the Google TV Streamer for most homes; pay Apple's price only if you live in iPhones and keep boxes for years.

  • Google's box is $149.99 and Apple's is $299 (as of October 2026), so Apple needs roughly double the lifespan to cost the same per year.
  • Siri AI is listed for an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) or later, so owning one is a reason to skip the upgrade.
  • Google's store page gives no update-support years, so the cheaper box carries the less certain lifespan.

Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer: what does $149.01 buy?

The extra $149.01 buys Apple's newer A19 chip and four times Google's storage, but not Siri AI, which Apple says also runs on older Apple TV 4K boxes. Apple's newsroom release of 13 October 2026 puts the new box at $299 in the US, on pre-order now and in stores from Friday 13 November.

Google's side moved first. The Google Store lists the Google TV Streamer at $149.99 as of October 2026, and AFTVnews reported on 31 August 2026 that Google had raised it from $99.99, with no explanation quoted from Google. Any review that mentions a round $100 is describing a list price that is gone. Ads are the cost a price tag hides; our Roku vs Google TV ads comparison covers the Google home screen.

Worked example: assume a household that keeps either box five years, already owns a spare HDMI 2.1 cable and resells nothing. Apple: $299 divided by 5 is $59.80 a year. Google: $149.99 divided by 5 is $30.00 a year, rounded. The difference is $29.80 a year, which is the real price of choosing Apple. Your own sum: the price you find, divided by the years you will really keep the box.

Your numbers
Apple, per year$59.80
Google, per year$30.00
Apple costs extra per year$29.80
Years Apple needs to match10.0 yr
Apple would have to last 10.0 yr to match what Google costs each year, so Google is the cheaper way to own a box at these settings.Sliders need JavaScript. Figures shown are the article's example.Apple $299 from Apple's newsroom of 13 October 2026; Google $149.99 from the Google Store as of October 2026. The resale share is your own estimate, not a sourced figure.

Two more sums from the same arithmetic. Replacing the Google box every three years costs $50.00 a year, still below the $59.80 for an Apple box kept five. And dividing Apple's $299 by Google's $30.00 yearly figure gives about ten years, the life Apple's box needs to cost the same per year. Our opinion: few people keep a streaming box for a decade. For scale, the gap is a little more than a year of the ad-free upgrade that our Netflix ad-free breakdown prices at $132 a year (October 2026).

Three of these figures are subtraction from the vendors' pages; the fourth is Apple's own chip claim, which this article could not verify.

Storage is where the extra money is most concrete. Google's page pitches its smaller pool as room to "install more of your favorite apps", which suits a handful of streaming apps.

The extra $149.01 is paid once, so it only pays back if the Apple box outlasts the Google one by about double.

Where do the two boxes actually differ?

They differ mainly in price and storage, with Apple's specs page listing 128 GB and Wi-Fi 7 against the 32 GB and 4 GB of memory on Google's store page, which names no Wi-Fi standard.

Both boxes list Ethernet and Thread, so those lines are left out. Apple's memory is unlisted, so that line is too.

Each page leaves one line blank, so any speed ranking between the two is guesswork until an independent lab publishes figures.

Apple TV 4K at $299, split in two $149.99 $149.01 Google's price Apple's premium

Roughly half of Apple's $299 matches what Google charges for its box, and the other half is the premium you are deciding whether to pay. Derived from Apple's $299 newsroom price and the Google Store's $149.99, both as of October 2026.

Does Siri AI work on an older Apple TV 4K?

Yes: Apple's 13 October 2026 release lists the Siri AI beta, arriving in tvOS 27.2, for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) or later, so a box you already own gets it without paying $299. The catch is the phone. The home owner needs an iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence turned on, the server-side features have daily limits, and Apple's footnote says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. If nobody in your house owns a qualifying phone, the feature is no reason to buy.

Google's side has its own gap. The store page lists no update-support years, so our five-year sum is an assumption, not a promise. Treat the Google box as a three-year purchase and the arithmetic still favours it. Nothing published says the August price will fall back, so we would not plan around a sale.

  • Compare the retailer's price: AFTVnews noted that Amazon, Walmart and Target had not yet raised theirs on 31 August 2026.
  • Budget for a cable: Apple's specs page says HDMI cable is sold separately, and Google's FAQ says the same of its HDMI 2.1 cable.
  • Match the Wi-Fi to the router: our Wi-Fi 7 router versus mesh guide shows when a new router is the bigger spend.

Check these about your home before you pay

  • Your current box is an Apple TV 4K, 2nd generation or later: Siri AI needs no new hardware.
  • You expect to replace the box within three years: the lower price wins outright.
  • Your router is older than Wi-Fi 7: Apple's network edge goes unused.
  • Every phone at home is an iPhone and you expect ten years: the gap closes.

Our call is the Google TV Streamer. This week, check its price at the Google Store and at one other retailer and buy the lower one, unless you already own an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) or later. The call is wrong for an iPhone household keeping the box far past five years, so read the current figure on the Google Store page and Apple's release before you pay.

How we checked this

Prices and specs come from Apple's newsroom release (13 October 2026), Apple's specs page and the Google Store listing (both read 31 October 2026). The August repricing is from AFTVnews (31 August 2026, secondary). The worked example assumes five years, no resale and an owned cable. No product was tested hands-on for this article, and the A19 speed claim is Apple's own. Last verified: 31 October 2026. Edited by Ragu, reviewed after publication. Spotted something out of date?
